I have gradually come to the conclusion that it is worth attempting to queen a pawn in the opening if the others allow it, and it is worth stopping the others if you can without loss of more than a pawn or knight. This is dangerous, especially for beginners as you fall behind in development and make yourself an obvious target as with an extra queen you are likely perceived as a threat. So you have to know what to do with the queen once you get it and that is to find somewhere safe for it where it is not easily exposed to attack. Just as king safety is extremely important, queen safety is more important than in a 2 player game.
