I feel as though this next season will be make or break for Callum Hudson-Odoi at Chelsea, and yes I am aware of the rumours linking him away this summer.

Whilst this can never be ruled out, it is clear that Hudson-Odoi wants to stay and make it at his boyhood club, but to do this he is going to need to be more accommodated.

Hudson-Odoi is a great talent full of potential, but he is largely being played out of position. How many young players are asked to do this, and then expected to still show their full potential every game?

Callum has been far from poor on the right for me, and he has shown some signs of real magic. However, if you want the very best out of him he must be playing on the left, even if that is the left sided ten in Thomas Tuchel’s current setup, or left wing back, he must play on the left.

He is much more comfortable, and dangerous, when he is driving at defenders on the left and has the option to cut inside and unleash a shot, a lot like Eden Hazard used to do so well in a Chelsea shirt.

He must improve his finishing of course, and his final ball. But I am watching a player last season that knew he wasn’t ever going to get much time to show what he can do, and when he did, he was simply over-playing, or trying to hard.

Things will come a lot more naturally to him if he knows he has the time to play, and he is in his more comfortable left sided position.

There is every chance that Chelsea sell Marcos Alonso AND Emerson Palmieri this summer, so I believe Hudson-Odoi can be a good backup choice to Ben Chilwell at left wing back, if we continue to play that setup.

His defending has improved, and his tracking back and work rate is getting much, much better as well. I think if he has some time to learn and be coached the left wing back role a little more in pre-season, he can be a great backup option there, and it will give him a chance to get more game time.

I think it’s a no-brainer personally…
