Rafa Benitez celebrates Newcastle win over Stoke

The Benitez banner

Everton have appointed Rafa Benitez as their new manager and has been adjusting to life as the Toffees main man.

Taking over from Carlo Ancelotti, the Spaniard has some big shoes to fill. Not only that, but he has the difficulty of winning over large sections of the Everton fan base who were not particularly pleased with a former Liverpool boss becoming their new head coach.

Some went to very extreme and disturbing lengths to voice their opposition to the idea of Benitez taking over.

A large banner was erected near the former Valencia and Real Madrid coach’s house which read, ‘We know where you live. Dont sign.’

It was later understood the banner was not in fact placed outside his home.

Benitez not concerned

Benitez was questioned in his first press conference with his new club about the banner.

He was also asked about the divisiveness of opinion surrounding his appointment.

“The Evertonians around my place, they are quite happy and they were very supportive,” said Benítez.

“Even the Liverpool fans were accepting that there is a chance for me to come back to the Premier League to compete for something, so it was quite good.

“Talking about the banner we can talk about one, two people, you never know. So then I think it’s better to think about positives, how a lot of people were encouraging me to do well, I’m happy with that.

“Even when I decided to start talking [to Everton], I was convinced that this is a great opportunity. So it’s not something that I am scared of, the opposite.

“I want to do well. And what that means is to win.”

Everton couldn’t achieve their goal of a European place with Ancelotti and this will be the main target for Benitez. He has won trophies in plenty of the clubs he has coached and this too will be another ambition.

He has a strong squad but seeing which players are brought in under Benitez will hopefully shed some light on the football he may be intending to play.
