Villarreal vs Arsenal: Villareal take an early lead

The hosts took a lead just after 5 minutes. The goal came after Chukwueze did brilliantly on the right-wing after he took Xhaka on and raced into the box.

He tried to trick his way through but was unable to do so as the Arsenal defense knicked the ball away with their toes. Unfortunately for Arsenal, the ball perfectly to Trigueros who drilled the ball into the bottom-left corner from a tight angle.

Villareal double their lead

Raul Albiol doubled Villareal’s lead in the 29th minute. The goal came after a corner was whipped into the box from the left by Parejo and Moreno flicked it towards Albiol who headed the ball into the net.

It was poor marking by the center-backs as Albiol was left unmarked. Thomas Partey was supposed to mark him but it was poor defending by the Ghana international.

Dani Ceballos Red Card

It went from bad to worse for the Gunners. Ceballos who already received a yellow in the 1st half was shown the 2nd yellow for a late challenge on Parejo. The Arsenal players were frustrated by this decision.

Thomas Partey was shown a yellow card as well for objecting to the referee’s decision.

Arsenal Scores an Away Goal

The Gunners were awarded a penalty after Saka dribbled the ball to take on a couple of Villareal defenders. Trigueros stuck his foot out and brought the youngster down in the box.

Arsenal pulled one back as Nicolas Pepe converted the penalty very calmly. He sent the keeper the wrong way and comfortably placed the ball in the middle to cut the deficit into half in the 73rd minute.

The 2 teams will face again next week at the Emirates.
